At least the "being in condition" part I think is the same. I still give the
horses off before a big coaching or driving event. I find they have more
stamina.
Last summer when we did the 126 mile coaching run from Monticello to Poplar
Forest, retracing Jefferson's route, I put the horses out in pasture for two
weeks of rest before and they did well. But again they were fit before
