Okay, I'll help get the list going. I finally received my new, used pair
vehicle, and it's really nice. It is from NEC and a marathon vehicle. So
we hitched the girls up with the help of a knowlegable neighbour to get
things adjusted properly, and off we went. They've driven pairs before, two
Morgans, mother and daughter. We were going down a slight incline in the
limerock road at a slow trot when the 5 year old stumbled and fell to her
knees and of course the other one is still slow trotting until the off horse
can regain her feet. When she did, her knees were awful! One was skinned
good, the other a huge chunk of flesh and hide were gone! We were a mile
from home, so we slow trotted home, there was hardly any blood at all, and
she hardly took a lame step. We cold hosed and called the vet. He came and
slapped iodine ointment on it and bandaged it. This was nearly 3 weeks ago.
After 3 days I didn't like the looks of it, still dead looking flesh, so I
put some sugar on it with the ointment, and that made it nice and pink
again, and healthy looking. Then I did an internet search for catastrophic
wounds and found a product called equaide, found where it was sold, and got
some. Now nearly 3 weeks later the hole has filled in, and looks pink and
healthy, and there is no proud flesh. She just needs to grow hide back over
it, which takes a long time.
Hardest part has been keeping her wrapped and confined. She gets bored, so
we put a round bale in front of her, so her buddies will come in and hang
out with her more to keep her happy. She gets turned out a few hours a day,
and of course drops and rolls, and gets up bucking! Then settles and eats
grass. I had to make her a pair of pants from my sweat pants to keep her
from fulling her bandages off. She gets bored easily. I am wrapping every
second day and cleaning it now, and it's healing well. If I can just keep
her wrapped a few more days, I think we'll have it beat.
So, I'm whining that my pairs training was set back another 6 weeks. I
wanted to start off slow and do a lot of walking and mileage in general. So
I'm back to single for now, but still anticipating getting the girls out
when she's healed. I'll watch those down hill slopes for sure. Who would
have thought those limerocks embedded in the road could be so sharp! I've
been taking pictures and documenting the healing to see how this Equaide
works, and so farm I'm impressed with it. I'm hoping for no scar or proud
flesh for sure. It just made me sick to see the scope of the injury from a
fall on a road. Has this happened to anyone else?
Debbie
