[drivingpairs] Hurricane Help Update

We made our trip to the large animal emergency operations center for Desoto
county today. At about 6:00 this morning Dede Conner, Florida Whips VP, my
friend Regina, Tim "the Amber Acres delivery guy", Lindsay, "the Amber Acres
girl", and myself headed south with a full truck. My body and brain are beat,
but my spirit has been refreshed. The trip provided sensory overload - way too
much to experience in one day. I'll only give the short version for the lists.
In two days time, Brevard county and a few members of the Florid Whips managed
to put together a truckload of goods that exceeded $2000. I was humbled by the
generosity of so many, and perplexed by the callousness of a few. The
operations center is a feat of organization and is doing a tremendous job of
collecting and supplying the large animal owners affected by the hurricane. We
arrived about 9:00 am with our load and had the truck empty within the hour.
Everything had a place - hay, sweet feed, oats, pellet
 s,
alafalfa cubes, fly spray, medical supplies, buckets, halters, leads,
groooming supplies - everything imaginable that is needed for the well being of
horses. Our donation was greeted with overwhelming appreciation by the staff
at the center and by the steady stream of "customers" arrving to shop for
needs. We would catch bits and pieces of stories as people came in. the
supportive and caring atomosphere was contagious and kept us from leaving. We
stayed and helped to load trucks and trailers for a few hours and then got back
on the road, knowing we had done a good thing.
Their need for asistance is great. Recovery for many will be a very long
process, for some it will never happen. The greatest need for now is medicines,
drugs and related wound care supplies, particularly antibiotics, banamine,
bute, medication for eye injuries. If you have the urge - lend your help,
take a minute out of your life to make someone else's a little better. Put
$5.00 in an envelope, send it to The Florida Whips c/o Peggy Stevenot, 827
North Bay Street, Eustis, FL 32726, mark if for Hurricane Help.
