I found a nifty neoprene/velcro wrap (called Roll Bar Rapz) at
4wheelparts.com. It was designed to cover a roll bar (e.g. on a Jeep).
I used foam pipe insulation over the pole (on a Bird-in-Hand Flyer) and
covered it with the Rapz. I haven't been able to convince my wife to
embroider striping on it to match the original striping on the pole ;)
It comes in black & colors, including Neon Pink - is that close to
purple?
(Before I found this, the next best solutions were designed for
football/soccer goal pipes and playground equipment padding.)
