I put the pole straps on first as well, then do up the coupling rein, then
traces. However, I have the pole strap in the loosest hole and leave the end
hanging free. If all goes well, I tighten the pole strap after the traces are
attached. If not, and there have been nots, I can grab the tongue of the pole
strap and yank the buckle free to detach a horse. The theory, I think, was
that with a heavy coach, a horse with the pole strap done up first was pretty
securely "in place." I am not so sure its the best arrangement with a light
carriage (and the brake should be on so that the carriage doesn't get pulled or
roll into the horses) but I try to hook up the same way, all the time. I also
take a walk around the whole affair going "reins, ok. traces, ok, etc." before
everyone is hooked and before I climb up. Marged
