[drivingpairs] Re: Help with Hitching New Pair

If your horse is truly afraid of the pole, you need to condition him a LOT
more. Get some of those pool noodles...Wall Mart sells them as well as lots
of other places. They are foam pipes about 6 feet long and only a few
dollars each. Now get creative with some binder twine and make a pair of
shafts with the noodles that will hang around the horse and bump him at the
level of the carriage pole. Ground drive the begeebers out of him....lots
and lots of different times until there is no reaction to the noodles (they
can't hurt themselves with the noodles.)

Now really pad your pole. Use foam and electrical tape and make it nice and
cushy. When you do get around to putting to, switch sides so the old scary
memories of the pole are not associated with the side this timid horse is
attached to.

Personally, I think you need to do a lot more singles driving as well. This
horse is without enough confidence at this point. The de-sensitizing
explained above will help a lot, but he needs to be a bit steadier before
putting him in a pair.
