Hello, Let me introduce myself.
I am new to DrivingPairs. Though I have yet to drive a pair, I have a long
time dream of getting into pairs driving.
I started my driving career with a 16h Standardbred Ex-race Pacer and had
great fun with him. There was the Welsh for the kids, then the Arabian.
My next was a 15.1h National Show Horse that I had for 9 yrs. He had the
endurance and was an absolutely beautiful horse (which explains why I put
up with this explosive spook for so long) but he was to small for my new
wagonette. Then my Tennessee Walker...
I currently have a 15.1h half Percheron Cross (Morgan?) that I'm driving
to a 4 passenger wagonette. It's a heavy carriage that needs his heft to
pull single but he lacks the speed, endurance and brilliance I desire for
my pleasure driving afternoons in the hilly Vermont countryside. The
wagonette is the perfect vehicle to share my passion with friends and
neighbors but I need the right pair to pull it comfortably.
So, after 20 years experience with single driving - starting several
different horses in driving, I am ready to make the plunge.
Any advice or help this community can provide in helping make the
transition in an affordable way will be greatly appreciated as I'm looking
for the right pair and harness. I'm looking for a 15h+ pair that will be
well suited for endurance/pleasure driving and trail riding pursuit's.
Also like to hear opinions regarding the horse's ability to pull weight
comfortably with a collar harness vs the breast harness as I currently
use. Any rules of thumb?
