[drivingpairs] Driving while sitting on the right side

The guy who runs the General's Mounted Color Guard at Fort Riley Kansas
recently called me. The Color Guard is the ceremonial cavalry unit. They
have recently acquired two wagons to add to the unit. He asked me several
driving questions which I think I fielded fairly well. The one I couldn't
answer for sure was why do we sit on the right side of the carriage while
driving, cars are on the left? I know that I heard the history behind this
at one time, but I just couldn't remember for sure. I told him that I
thought it may have been to allow you to look at the relationship of your
wheel and the road ditch. I just don't think this was the origin of this,
but I can't remember. Is it a left over from England: I told him I would
check with some real experts and get him the answer.
