[drivingpairs] Re: Driving a Gelding and Mare

We've been driving and competing a mixed pair of Morgans for several years
with no gender related problems. The mare and gelding have never been
pastured together, but are in adjacent pastures with only a single fence
between, The gelding is not at all studdy and the mare goes into season
normally with no change in her behavior toward her partner. No medication
for either.
We took the usual precautions in getting the horses to know each other by
ground driving them side by side, separately at first, then together before
hitching them.
Incidentally, Hardy Zanke wrote an excellent 5 part series of articles for
this pairs list on starting and driving any kind of pair with emphasis on
basics and dressage.
