Our current pair consists of a gelding and a mare. They live together with another 4-year old mare turned out 24/7. They all get along wonderfully. All have the same non-alpha type of disposition. The gelding and mare even drive as a tandem with the mare in the lead. I think you have to look at the horses as individuals and not by sex. It's like saying two people can't get along (or can) because one is a man and the other a woman. I think a lot of the draft teams (pairs) consisted of a mare and a gelding. They really bond well.
