We often, over the last 25 years have driven mares. Last year for a while we
had an all mare four-in-hand, not by design but just worked out that way. We
have found that a mare will tend to have a bit more bottom then a gelding, try
just a bit harder.
We have never had a problem with any of our mares with the grand exception of
one mare who has been a leader in our team for now, 11 years.
The following is absolutely true. Honest
Whenever we restart driving in the spring, whenever that is, February, March,
April or May this mare will go into heat and be virtually undrivable, She
remains that way for three to four days and then all is over until the next
year.
If we take her out after the first day for a week or month she will start all
over again when put back into harness. She must be driven three to four days
consecutively before she gets over it.
She is turned out with the same horses in the team over the winter. It does
not happen when one rides her in the spring but ridding her before does not
change her behavior when put to the carriage.
Our only conclusion is that the Carriage turns her on
