Thanks for more clarification Dana. I sometimes forget
about the equines under 14h.  With the zippy ponies,
you sure don't need them getting too many signals! 
They can be TOO helpful with all that information.  We
haven't had a 12h pony for a very long time.  She was
something else even as an aged pony.

You are correct about using different bit sides,
elbow, butterfly, that can swivel out and not pinch
horse lips at all.  We find that sometimes the many
more adjustments that Liverpool sides allow, can out
weigh the the advantages of other bit styles.  This is
comparing bit sides with them all having the same
mouthpiece, on our horses.

The visual of the bit guard blinkers made me laugh. 
Never thought of tiny pony heads!!
  When we used guards on the smaller horses, I just
cut the edges back to fit the proportions of the bit
on horse.  None of our little 14.2h horses really had
tiny heads, wore cob and regular sized bridles.

Again, thanks for your experiences Dana.  Always good
to learn of what others are working with, in size,
reaction times.  Details gives me a better
understanding from another angle.

<I think there is a bit of difference in our choice of
 driving animals, Kathy. . . 12.2 hand  ponies versus 
 16 hand Clevelands. I've found the smaller ponies
really need things to be as still as possible for them
to be steady. . . for example a double linked bit
gives too much information for one of mine, even as a
single he is happier with some form of mullen mouth. 
Butterfly mouthpieces can swivle out with out piching.
Imagine a small pony with a rubber bit guard. . . it
would look like a second set of blinkers !
