I cannot remember where I read the information on
hitching chariots. It stated the chariots were
harnessed with neck yokes like cattle used. Cattle
(oxen) were the first pullers of chariots, so men just
moved the attachment system to horses. Used nose
rings on horses at first too! This viewpoint would
cover the low pole coming up between the horses,
attaching to the neck yoke at the shoulder point or at
the bottom of cross neck bar on horses, which would
lay in front of the withers. Bent wood saplings would
go around the throat/neck to neck cross-bar, fastening
animals in. Hard, wooden neck yoke would not have a
martingale to hold it down, breeching or even girths!
Adaptation would have intoduced those features,
perhaps to lessen soring of working animals so they
could work longer.
I do remember going thru a book, titled something
like "Ancient to Modern Harness Systems for Horses".
It had a lot of odd information. Used lots of ancient
art, vases, friezes, mosaics as illustrations for his
reasoning. Only ever saw that one copy and it was
years ago.
