In Iceland, where the *average* 20 year old male is 6' tall and weighs 270 lbs,
and where men are the primary riders, they do not start Icelandic "horses"
(average height 13 hh) until they are 4, and do not do serious work until they
are 6, when they are considered mature. The average working life span of
Icelandics is at least into the mid-twenties. One horse won the World
Championship in pace racing (ridden) at the age of 27. The Icelanders have a
saying, "A year at the beginning is 10 years at the end."
