Obviously you didn't lose the reins completely, which is good, and to prevent
that from happening I don't like the little string or loop over a finger. The
little leather loop is proper style for Pleasure Driving, but for marathons I
think it's distracting in my hand. Instead I used to run a velcro strap
through the end of the buckled reins and keep that around my leg, just to make
sure, if I ever would drop the reins for whatever reason, I would not lose them
completely. Later, when I drove with a seatbelt, I just ran the seatbelt
through
the buckled end loop of the reins. (Seatbelt, one end attached to the
carriage, the other end wrapped twice around the back rail of the seat and then
end
held by the navigator to be let go in case of need.)
And yes, I only use leather reins for proper grip (see Achenbach rein
handling discussion recently).
