Besides elbow grease, hiring someone and buying all new, what is your secret
to getting good quality but older leather to look GOOD for presentation?

Subject: [drivingpairs] Follow up story on Ansel and Adam
Hi Friends,
Some of you might remember my concern about a new pair of perch geldings I
bought last spring--Ansel and Adam. I was worried that they were a poor
match
because Adam wanted to be up in the collar and anxious and Ansel was very
laid
back. I was placing most of the blame on Adam.
After considering all of your advice and devising a buckback strap---here's
what we did.
We did single work with both horses, encouraging Adam to take it easy and
pushing Ansel on. We put them together a few times to check progress and
were
pleased.
Today, I must say, was breakthrough day!
I need these horses for carriage rides at a resort this week and wanted to
do a trial run. Each had done the ride hitched with my oldies, but had not
been
driven together there. My husband, John, and I put them to the carriage and
headed on the road the mile to the resort. I asked John to hold the whip so
I
could concentrate on driving and dealing with traffic. His job was to push
Ansel up and keep him engaged so Adam wouldn't feel like he was having to
carry too much of the load himself.
It all went perfectly!! We did the drive, crossed a wooden bride (twice),
went by two fields of galloping horses, and one with a llama and sheep. We
saw
dump trucks, backhoes, trucks and trailers and golf carts. No problems.
Yippppeeeee!!
A success! Adam stayed calm and never got up into the bridle like he had
done before. There was no jigging or nervousness.
Thank you all for your input. I carefully considered all of your advice. I
never had to use the buckback strap. I did tighten the curb chain a little
on
Adam and loosened it on Ansel. We kept Ansel fully engaged and that helped
Adam to be totally relaxed.
We did our homework and it paid off.
Best,
Carla Hawkinson
