I haven't been driving much this year. My children are finally tolerating
being outside in the garden and I've got five years of catch up work to be
done. When I have gone out I've been very pleased with how steady my boys have
been. You can feel the core strength, I suppose the bones and ligaments have
been hardened the last two years and they feel good to the hand even if they do
lack stamina. I can push the laggard very easily into the bridle, and I am
sure to give him breaks as he is also the draftier (harder to get fit) and
smaller guy. Anyway I have to remind myself to give credit where it's due- I
depend on my semi-annual tweakings by the professionals when I can manage it.
Awfully sorry to have missed Sterling at Wendy Ying's last weekend! We are
entered for the Driving Derby at Upperville in a couple of weeks. Billy (near
pony) will probably embarrass me by shying at things he never gets to see at
home and making me cream some cones. Jesse is as forward as t
hey get.
Single work would be the best correction but I think it will have to wait
until school is out and I can have more help. Not in time for the competition
unfortunately but I can't wait just the same. I think they will be marvelous,
they are already bunches of fun but they are as different as can be and need
the individual workout and attention. No, I don't think I'm proficient enough
with the long lines to get them there that way. They are tiny, 11 hh, and so
quick that every error is magnified. They are sort of third hand rescues and
take offense at those sort of mistakes. In the meantime I'm working on pace,
and doing serpentines on the road which show amazing one sidedness that I
haven't noticed before. I can do a good halfhalt on the outside rein into the
turn to the left, but going to the right it doesn't work at all. Hmm. Maybe
some line driving would show who is the problem, or could it be the pair line
setup that is the problem? I'll keep you all posted.
