First word, from Don:
It's been a while since I wasn't able to post the mid-month
issue on the evening before it's due but we've been busy
lately. We're marshaling our resources and preparing to
buy a house. The real estate market is 'in the toilet'
but that makes this the best of all possible times to
buy a house. Of course that's only true if one is very
cautious about financing and interest rates. Plenty of
knowledgeable folks are predicting that the economy is
going to get a lot worse before it gets better and,
however it goes, we'll have to continue making the monthly
payments. Buying a house always requires establishing
a careful balance between what you want and what you can
afford but finding that balance in this economy is like
tap dancing in golf shoes on thin ice. Still, we want
stability in our lives and that requires us to find a
place to live for the rest of our lives. More importantly,
a place we can afford despite how bad the economy becomes.
I don't like gambling but, when you get down to it, life
is a gamble. We have to take our chances, like
everybody else. *sigh* Life gets tedious, don't it?
*grin*
See you next time,
Don

Jo-Ann Burton is a wonderful friend. We didn't
grow up together, and we've never met in person
but she's my sister. I harvest links that she
posts to her Yahoo group (to which I belong)
and once in a while, when Lisa and I are short
on links, I put together an entire section from
her posts. To give you an idea of how prolific
she is, I take the digest version of her list
and the following links were gathered from
digests 2334 through 2339 which were posted
in November and December of 2007 (yeah, I know,
I'll never catch up with her).

A Little Humor.
From our other-brother Bill (Beeyil) Lanoue:
Here are the winners of this year's Washington Post's
Mensa Invitational which asked readers to take any word
from the dictionary, alter it by adding, subtracting,
or changing one letter, and supply a new definition:
1. Cashtration (n.): The act of buying a house,
which renders the subject financially impotent
for an indefinite period of time.
2. Ignoranus: A person who is both stupid and an #%$hole.
3. Intaxication: Euphoria at getting a tax
refund, which lasts until you realize it
was your money to start with.
4. Reintarnation: Coming back to life as a hillbilly.
5. Bozone (n.): The substance surrounding stupid
people that stops bright ideas from penetrating.
The bozone layer unfortunately, shows little
sign of breaking down in the near future.
6. Giraffiti: Vandalism spray-painted very, very high.
7. Sarchasm: The gulf between the author of sarcastic
wit and the person who doesn't get it.
8. Inoculatte: To take coffee intravenously
when you are running late.
9. Osteopornosis: A degenerate disease.
10. Karmageddon: It's like, when everybody is sending
off all these really bad vibes, right? And then, like,
the Earth explodes and it's like, a serious bummer.
11. Decafalon (n.): The grueling event of
getting through the day consuming only
things that are good for you.
12. Glibido: All talk and no action.
13. Dopeler Effect: The tendency of stupid ideas
to seem smarter when they come at you rapidly.
14. Arachnoleptic Fit (n.): The frantic dance
performed just after you've accidentally walked
through a spider web.
15. Beelzebug (n.): Satan in the form of a mosquito,
that gets in your bedroom at three in the morning
and cannot be cast out.
16. Caterpallor (n.): The color you turn after
finding half a worm in the fruit you're eating.
The Washington Post has also published the winning
submissions to its yearly contest in which readers
are asked to supply alternate meanings for common
words. And the winners are:
1. Coffee, n. The person upon whom one coughs.
2. Flabbergasted, adj. Appalled by discovering
how much weight one has gained.
3. Abdicate, v. To give up all hope
of ever having a flat stomach.
4. Esplanade, v. To attempt an explanation while drunk.
5. Willy-nilly, adj. Impotent.
6. Negligent, adj.. Absentmindedly answering
the door when wearing only a nightgown.
7. Lymph, v. To walk with a lisp.
8. Gargoyle, n. Olive-flavored mouthwash.
9. Flatulence, n.. Emergency vehicle that picks up
someone who has been run over by a steamroller.
10. Balderdash, n. A rapidly receding hairline.
11. Testicle n. A humorous question on an exam.
12. Rectitude, n. The formal, dignified
bearing adopted by proctologists.
13. Pokemon, n. A Rastafarian proctologist.
14. Oyster, n. A person who sprinkles
his conversation with yiddishisms.
15. Frisbeetarianism, n. The belief that, after death,
the soul flies up onto the roof and gets stuck there.
16. Circumvent, n. An opening in the front
of boxer shorts worn by Jewish men.
Editor's Note: This was the last joke in my files.
Of course I can always find some with google but
it's nice to have some reader input too. So, if
you run across a 'good one' I hope you'll pass it on.

The most important people on the Internet, for you and
I as computer users, are software developers. The world's
coolest computer, without software, is like a car without
fuel. It might look great, but what can it do?
It doesn't matter who produces the software you love
and use regularly, the developers of that software
need and deserve your support.
A bit of advice from Internet veteran Bayard J. Fox:
New computer users are often in awe of the things you can
get without cost on the Internet. There can be hidden
costs for the unwary. Use a 'throw away' email address to
register, and be constantly on guard against giving away
personal information. Use a firewall, and provide only
the barest minimum of information on questionnaires.
