Don's Patch #101, September 15, 2008 from http://www.don-guitar.com
Online version: http://www.don-guitar.com/currentissue.html
Archives: http://www.freelists.org/archives/donspatch/
First word, from Don:
For the last few years I've told myself I'd remember a particular event
in order to mention it in the ezine and every year I forget. Last year
I went to Memo To Me...
http://www.memotome.com/
...and arranged to send myself a reminder so this year I didn't forget
that Friday, September 19th is Talk Like a Pirate Day. "Arrrr, matey".
http://www.talklikeapirate.com/
Sure, it's silly but come on, a little silly every now and then is good
for what ails us.. What's the worst that could happen if you took a shot
at talking like a pirate? I did a google image search on "pirate lol"
to find a related image. There were many but I decided on this one.
http://www.funnydog.net/images/pirate-dog.jpg
I do a lot of cooking because I enjoy the challenge of managing to
serve something really tasty that doesn't offend any of Lisa's food
sensitivities. For the last couple of days I've been experimenting
with "faux" oatmeal cookies. I say "faux" because she can't eat
oats or wheat. We've got some rolled barley that makes a good
substitute for oats and I'd normally use spelt in place of the
flour but we're out of spelt and we can't buy it locally.
What is spelt? http://www.pacificbakery.com/spelt.htm
So I substituted garbanzo bean flour. That may sound odd but
it's a wonderfully light and tasty flour which has no trace of a
bean flavor once it's cooked. The cookies are additively good.
http://www.don-guitar.com/fauxtmeal.html
We really appreciated the nice comments a few of you sent
in with regards to our 100th issue. I don't know if we're good
for 100 more but here's where it begins, with #101. Let's get
started...

A young boy decided to surprise his mother by bringing her a cup of
coffee in bed. He'd made the coffee himself and was very proud. His
mother tasted the coffee and almost spat it out, it was so bad. As she
forced down the last sip, she discovered three little toy soldiers at the
bottom. When she asked about this, her son said, "you know, mom,
the best part of waking up is soldiers in your cup!"

rolls up the guy's sleeve and is surprised to hear the arm say, "Hi,
doctor, could you lend me $20? I'm desperate!" The doctor turns to

We are so busted! Don's been baking cookies and
I've been looking at food blogs (food porn). I've
planted a Fall-Winter-Early Spring flower bed of
snapdragons, flowering kale and violas. Anybody
add up the clues yet?
It's Fall, time to tidy up the garden and eat myself
unconscious. Not this year, no way. I just spent 3
months and lots of deprivation losing 15lbs. I'm not
going to pad myself up for winter this year, only to
have to work it off in the Spring. I'll let you know
how it goes. Did I mention Don is a wonderful cook?
And he thinks it's very funny watching me try to diet?
Wish me luck.

The most important people on the Internet, for you and I as
computer users, are software developers. The world's coolest
computer, without software, is like a car without fuel. It
might look great, but what can it do? It doesn't matter who
produces the software you love and use regularly, the developers
of that software need your support.
A bit of advice from Internet veteran Bayard J. Fox:
New computer users are often in awe of the things you can get
without cost on the Internet. There can be hidden costs for the
unwary. Use a "throw away" email address to register, and be
constantly on guard against giving away personal information.
Use a firewall, and provide only the barest minimum of
information on questionnaires.
