Don's Patch #95, June 1, 2008 from http://www.don-guitar.com
Online version: http://www.don-guitar.com/currentissue.html
Archives: http://www.freelists.org/archives/donspatch/
First word, from Don:
Lemme see, where should I begin? Oh yeah, I made several
changes in our website design recently. I've been after Lisa
to do this for a long time now (she has genuine artistic talent
whereas I'm just a ham-handed hacker) but when Roy (one of
our favorite readers) complained about having trouble reading
some things I went ahead and took my best shot at it. In our last
issue I mentioned that I'd made some changes but it seems that
almost nobody noticed. Roy emailed right away to say he hated it
and our friend Steven Scott emailed to say he really liked it but
that's not much of a concensus is it? Would you please visit our
home page http://www.don-guitar.com and one or more of the
pages listed in our index and tell me what you think? Our
feedback page (listed below) permits you to email us directly,
leave an anonymous message, write to us via your country's
postal service or even telephone us if you're so inclined.
Of course I'd prefer you tell me what you don't like about it
and/or make specific suggestions about improving it rather
than simply saying "I don't like it". In other words, tell me
why you don't like it so maybe I can figure out how to fix it.
I don't talk about it much in the ezine so many of you aren't
aware that Lisa and I are full-time (24/7) caregivers for my
mother. Mom has very advanced Alzheimer's and the slowest
growing form of non-Hodgkins lymphoma. Generally speaking
we have mostly good days and the occasional bad day but, just
lately, the bad days are gaining ground on us. There have been
times when it was difficult for us to get this ezine completed
and published on time and I suspect we've only seen the tip of
the iceberg when it comes to challenging times. There may
come a time when we're forced to publish late, or skip an issue
altogether. I hope you'll bear with us. This publication is a
labor of love; we look forward to writing it. We're proud and
honored that so many of you look forward to receiving it.
If you're saying to yourself "Gee, 393 subscribers isn't very
many people" you've got the wrong perspective. We live in
the community of Buchanan Lake Village which has a
population of just under 300 people. Nuff said.

A Little Humor.
My other-brother-Beeyil Lanoue sent me this joke:
Morris and his wife Esther went to the state fair every year, and every
year Morris would say, 'Esther,I'd like to ride in that helicopter.'
Esther always replied, 'I know Morris, but that helicopter ride is fifty
dollars, and fifty dollars is fifty dollars' One year Esther and Morris
went to the fair, and Morris said, 'Esther, I'm 85 years old. If I don't
ride that helicopter, I might never get another chance.' To this, Esther
replied, 'Morris that helicopter ride is fifty dollars, and fifty dollars is
fifty dollars.' The pilot overheard the couple and said, 'Folks I'll make
you a deal. I'll take the both of you for a ride. If you can stay quiet
for
the entire ride and not say a word, I won't charge you! But if you say
one word, it's fifty dollars.' Morris and Esther agreed and up they went.
The pilot did all kinds of fancy maneuvers, but not a word was heard.
He did his daredevil tricks over and over again, but still not a word.
When they landed, the pilot turned to Morris and said, 'By golly, I did
everything I could to get you to yell out, but you didn't. I'm impressed!'
Morris replied, 'Well, to tell you the truth, I almost said something
when Esther fell out, but you know, fifty dollars is fifty dollars!'
Thanks Beeyil
(Bill for those of you who don't understand Texas-style pronunciation)
A panda walks into a bar and orders a sandwich. When he
finishes, he pulls out a gun and shoots the waiter dead. As
the panda stands up to leave, the bartender shouts, "Hey!
Where are you going? You just shot my waiter and you
didn't pay for your sandwich!" The panda shouts back,
"Hey, I'm a panda -- look it up!" The bartender opens his
dictionary to "panda" and reads: "A bear-like black and
white animal native to mountainous regions of China
and Tibet. Eats shoots and leaves."
Here's a joke that Lisa (the Master Gardener) found.
The real meaning of plant catalog terminology:
'A favorite of birds' means to avoid
planting near cars, sidewalks, or clotheslines.
'Grows more beautiful each year' means
it'll resemble roadkill for the foreseeable future.'
'Zone 5 with protection' is a variation
on the phrase 'Russian roulette.'
'May require support' means your daughter's
engineering degree will finally pay off.
'Moisture-loving' means it's ideal for
landscaping all your bogs and swamps.
'Carefree' refers more to the plant's
attitude than to your workload.
'Vigorous' means it has a Napoleonic
compulsion to take over the world.
Anything listed as 'Grandma's Favorite' was only her favorite
until she discovered free-flowering, disease-resistant hybrids.

Last word, from Lisa:
Today I have the pleasure of presenting another website
to a client, a good friend and all-around great lady.
It's difficult to describe the pleasure I get from this,
it's satisfying on so many levels. For one thing, I get
to work from home; a necessity these days. Another is
providing a needed service at a reasonable price to small
business owners. So many times, people who don't have
the time or desire to become web-savvy are taken advantage
of, and that makes my blood boil. So I'm doing all I can
to ameliorate the situation, and getting an education in
the process. Developing a portfolio while having fun
seems almost like cheating. Hope I don't get caught...
'Til next time,
Lisa

The most important people on the Internet, for you and I as
computer users, are software developers. The world's coolest
computer, without software, is like a car without fuel. It
might look great, but what can it do? It doesn't matter who
produces the software you love and use regularly, the developers
of that software need your support.
A bit of advice from Internet veteran Bayard J. Fox:
New computer users are often in awe of the things you can get
without cost on the Internet. There can be hidden costs for the
unwary. Use a "throw away" email address to register, and be
constantly on guard against giving away personal information.
Use a firewall, and provide only the barest minimum of
information on questionnaires.
