Don's Patch Issue #2004-08-15 from http://www.don-guitar.com
Howdy ya'll, give me a minute to get my soap box adjusted because
I'm "fixin' to" step up on it and cut loose.
Most of us have at least one friend who's a forwarding junkie. For
the most part I don't raise too much fuss unless they start sending
me 300K emails or, and this is the topic I'm fired up about, until they
send me some sort of dire warning that turns out to be totally bogus.
A friend-who-shall-remain-nameless sent me a dire warning
about the "WTC Survivor" virus. I'd checked up on this one
before so I knew it was a hoax but rather than ask my friend to
simply take my word for it I did a quick google search on
"WTC Survivor" (in quotes) and nearly every link on the first
page of results was to a page on a trustworthy site (Symantec,
McAfee, Snopes, and more) which confirms that this warning is,
indeed, a hoax. I wrote him back and reminded him of an old
saying I've always liked: "If you're not part of the solution, you're
part of the problem".
Never forward any warning message you get in your email without
checking on it first. If the warning message doesn't have some
sort of clearly searchable key phrase, like this one did, then
type the first ten words of the warning message, in quotes, into
any good search engine. As often as not you'll find an answer
in the first page of results. Be a responsible forwarder.
http://www.don-guitar.com/forwarders.html
Remember, your input is always welcome. I value your suggestions
and comments, and I'm always willing to help you find answers to
your computer and Internet questions.

I'm still trying to decide how I feel about web logs. I've seen a
few which are superlative information resources and others
which are vainglorious drivel. In the traditional publishing
world there are editors who decide whether or not an authors
work is worthy of being published. Hopeful writers must
meet the standards of those editors. That doesn't guarantee
the reading public an endless stream of quality works to read,
editors are like anyone else in that some of them have no
taste, but at least some rudimentary screening is done and
the reading public is insulated from the worst of amateur
works. On the web just about anyone can afford to publish
with no editorial restraints and their work is instantly
accessible to an incredibly large and diverse audience.
Since published works are already in place without
benefit of editorial supervision in the form of blogs and
there's so much information there that average readers
simply don't have time to screen and review the work,
I assume we'll eventually see sites that make it their
business to locate and review web logs. I found a few
sites of this type.
http://www.theweblogreview.com/
http://www.blogarama.com/
http://www.blogselect.com/
http://www.blogit.com/Blogs/
I also found two sites that simply index weblogs.
http://www.blogwise.com/
http://www.blogsearchengine.com/
I encountered one programmer who detests blogs so much
that he created a text message and button image that
other blog-haters can display on their site. The text message
is too far over the family-friendly line for me to publish but
here's the button image:
http://www.verysimple.com/jason/images/blogfree.gif
I also found a site that's been created to assist individuals
in China who's government has blocked their access to some
free blog hosting sites.

If you have any comments on this special feature or on the
topic of blogs, I'd love to hear from you.

============== Humor =============
How to Wash a Cat:
1. Thoroughly clean the toilet.
2. Add the required amount of shampoo to the toilet water,
and have both lids lifted.
3. Obtain the cat and soothe him while you carry him
towards the bathroom.
4. In one smooth movement, put the cat in the toilet and
close both lids (you may need to stand on the lid so that
he cannot escape). Caution: Do not get any part of your
body too close to the edge, as his paws will be reaching
out for any purchase they can find.
5. Flush the toilet three or four times. This provides a
"powerwash and rinse" which I have found to be quite effective.
6. Have someone open the door to the outside and ensure that
there are no people between the toilet and the outside door.
7. Stand behind the toilet as far as you can, and quickly
lift both lids.
8. The now-clean cat will rocket out of the toilet, and run
outside where he will dry himself.
Sincerely,
The dog
============== Tips ===============
To copy/paste an entire email, on a Windows computer,
click once inside the text box (where the email is
visible) hold the "Ctrl" key down and tap the "A" key
once (which will highlight the entire email). Next,
hold the "Ctrl" key down and tap the "C" key. This
"copies" the highlighted text to Windows Clipboard
(a non-visible, temporary storage area). Open a
new email (or text editor), click once inside the text
box (where you'd normally type), hold down the "Ctrl"
key and tap the "V" key once. This "pastes the
stored text into your email (or editor) and you may
then edit the text if and as you wish.

Here's a couple of interesting sites from reader Leo.
http://www.freewareweb.com/ (site has both a pop-up
and a "floater")
All-in-One Secretmaker is designed for users who wish
to keep their email box free of (censored word), avoid
irritating pop-up and banner interruptions, protect their
privacy, avoids profiling, and use the Internet efficiently
for private or business use. http://www.secretmaker.com/
Thanks Leo.
A reader named John, who prefers that I not mention his surname,
sent this email.
"I don't know if you're old enough to remember the Apollo space
missions to the moon, but I am if just barely 8-)
[Editor's note: Yes John, I remember then well.]
http://www.apolloarchive.com offers some totally cool photos and
audio files of all the Apollo missions. I especially recommend
those for the Apollo 11 mission, the first to land on the moon.
There are also some good videos for those with a broadband
connection. This page took me back in time, and it's just as
thrilling if not more so the second time around.
I should add that I got the heads up for this site from another
newsletter I subscribe to. It can be found at
http://www.kimkommando.com and is very family friendly.
Enjoy."
Thanks John

Ok, that wraps up another issue. This is the fourth issue of
this publication and judging from reader feedback, most of
you feel it's at least as good as the ezine I wrote for
maxpatch.com. That being the case I'm ready to start
trying to do a little promoting but in all honesty I'm not
very good at that so it may take a while for some sort
of inspiration to strike me.
See you next time.

The most important people on the Internet, for you and I as computer
users, are software developers. The world's coolest computer, without
software, is like a car without fuel. It might look great, but what
can it do? It doesn't matter who produces the software you love and
use regularly, the developers of that software need your support.
A bit of advice from Internet veteran Bayard J. Fox:
New computer users are often in awe of the things you can get without
cost on the Internet. There can be hidden costs for the unwary. Use a
"throw away" email address to register, and be constantly on guard
against giving away personal information. Use a firewall, and provide
only the barest minimum of information on questionnaires.
