Sorry I did think of grabbing the latest version at one stage, then
promptly forgot and just used the last version I had. Anyway, I grabbed
dokuwiki-2005-06-29 and uncommented the correct line 129:
print "1$out"; return;
I did the test in the same way as previously described; results again
are attached in the .zip.

Yes you probably had the wrong version. You should see something like
"use this to debug aspell output" above the line I mentioned.
