This is a bug in media manager which I reported in this list 22 Sep 2005, but seems that I never submitted a bug report as Andy suggested... I totally forgot this after I reorganized my images away from root.
If I understood your fix correctly, then all pages having media from same namespace would be broken.
IMHO this problem is in mediamanager. With the leading colon it works as documented.
