[dokuwiki] Re: new server for *.splitbrain.org

Hi all!

Some of you may have noticed the sometimes bad performance at
splitbrain.org - the thing is that my server is running at it's edge and
I'm thinking about replacing it with a bigger machine.

I wrote about this at my blog[1] and was thinking aloud if and how I
could do this without using too much of my own money ;-) My first idea
was of course hoping for a big corporation donating a powerful machine.
My second idea was to milk the big corporations on the indirect way
using ads.

Well both ideas weren't thought through completely, but I got some
feedback already asking for response from my side. I answered the
suggestions at [2] and promised to discuss this at the list at well. So
here I do.

From the feedback I got until now, I have two people supporting the
adsense idea and two disliking it. I'd especially love to get input by
those who are involved most in the project about this topic. (If you
like, using private mail to not clutter the list)

Please read the two links I provided to understand my motivations. And
please also note that this is *not* a plea for donations by anyone of
you (except you represent a big corporation ;-)) - I will buy a new
server anyway, even if we can't work out an idea to monetize the traffic
my pages gets.

Andi,

What's wrong with both methods? You deserve something for your efforts (yes, I know Open Source is all about collaboration and community contributions but let's fact the cold, hard facts...it takes money to keep a project going, particularly once it really matures and gets a fairly signifiant user base)...Adsense ads are very unobtrusive and don't take away from the overall site (the dart league I play in has it on their site and they generate just about enough to cover the cost of hosting...which is fairly impressive for a league with under 150 players...not all of which actually hit the site). If a company wished to contribute a server to help offset the cost of ownership for this project I think that would be awesome (however, my experince has been that in general businesses enjoy open source projects for their low cost of ownership but when their bottom line starts to be affected they cough, and look the other way or the PHB asks why they are using "unsupported" software).

If you opted to go with both, you could always set up an account for future upgrades...that way you don't have to worry as much about absorbing the full cost a few years down the road. I like Dokuwiki and tend to give back where I can...usually in my own time with additions and tips (while I realize this isn't much that is what I like about open source...if you can't afford the monetary cost you can give back in time...even indirectly by contributing to other components that are used within the app).
