anything over 4.3 or higher should work. I have run Dokuwiki on PHP 4.4.0 and PHP5.

possibly there is a problem in your installation with the javascript files. 

Does your template provide any non-standard js stuff?
Same goes for your plugins.

Try disabling all plugins and switching to the standard template.
