Is it a Javascript reliability thing you're concerned with btw?

No, it is more a usability and accessibility thing.
Whenever someone turned off JavaScript or uses a browser (or RSS reader) that cannot handle it, he won't be able to obtain a rather *crucial* information.

You will find no part in DokuWiki for which JS is essential! (BTW, I am still delighted by the ingenious way the media popup is handled. :-) ) And I think we should pursue that philosophy.

That means, unless the original code is changed heavily, it
is only possible to add new methods that can have the same string for
both. So, any methods including e.g. images, are not appropriate. :-/

Hmm, just a thought, how about an authentication process to be able to
see email addresses-- like users can see them, but for guests a link
would click through to a CAPTCHA, then when authenticated, email
addresses would be properly exposed.

In general a good idea.
But again, the accessibility suffers: Blind people cannot read captchas and you'd have to add a "detour" for them ...
And this method is not compliant with the requirement to have the same string for displaying and linking the address ...

Maybe that calls for a plugin. People might want such a plugin despite its poor accessibility. What do others think?

What ideas do you have though?

I don't know. That's why I asked the mailinglist ... ;-)

But implementing something more complicated or using JavaScript for it
could make sense with a plugin ...

Which is why I had originally asked if this was actually doable as a
plugin, or if this needed to be in the codebase itself.

Didn't see an answer, but this was leading into , "are you working on
a plugin already? if so I could collaborate with you on it" :-)

So, are you? :-)

No, I am (and most probably will) not. But I think I will implement the combination of 'visible' and 'hex'.
And Andi told me he feels like developing a more complex mail obfuscation plugin, but I don't know when he will find the time or if he already began.

If it's doable? I think so. Otherwise DokuWiki would highly disappoint me. ;-)
But I am by no means very adept at plugins. So, any objections, Chris?
