[dokuwiki] Some beginner questions

Hi, i've just installed dokuwiki on a debian box and i have some questions.
1. I don't have a smtp server configured to work with that server and i did a bit of searching around but i couldn't find any way to configure dokuwiki to use something else than php's built in mail function. I modified mail.php to send mail using PEAR Mail api. Is there a better solution for this? (because i'm not really skilled when it comes to php so i would rather use something someone else wrote. What i did was a quick ugly fix).
2. RSS Feeds: I don't seem to be able to get the feed working with Thunderbird. To test if this a dokuwiki thing, i subscribed to the rss feeds at wiki.splitbrain.org and they seem to be working perfectly. What should i check/ configure/ modify to be able to make my dokuwiki install act as the one on splitbrain? Both firebird and thunderbird accept the feed.php as a feed subscription, they set the feed name right but the folder remains empty . 

I've installed dokuwiki using dokuwiki-2007-06-26b.tgz.
