Recently I have made special plugin for adding DokuWiki to Firefox
search engine list. It doesn't require any hacks in DW code.

yeah that's not really needed anymore ... latest dokuwiki includes support for
automatically generating opensearch code which both Firefox-2.0 and IE-7
support out of the box:
