The search index is built by the indexer webbug (you'll see it at the bottom of the default template main.php), the browser makes an image request and under the guise of fulfilling that request Dokuwiki ensures the page is included in the search index.

Do you have it in your template?
If you switch back to the default template and use the search button does it still show empty?
