If it has to be, would say Perl might be a useful compromise as it's widely installed on the average shared host. Of course you also then probably need shell access to the server. It's tricky through - IMO the reason why there are no serious pure-PHP search engines is PHP is essentially not a good choice for solving this type of problem, partly as fundamental things like the array data type are not particularily efficient for sorting and perhaps more because the support libraries are weak when compared to something like Perl's CPAN.
