[dokuwiki] Re: Proposals for a cleanup on the splitbrain wiki

Hi again,

Here is my second post about, this time, upcoming steps on wiki reorg...

First, if we have to review all pages, this may take a couple of days already so don't be afraid for this weekend ;-)

I think we can do all this with a minor threat to the uptime. Event if it's better to be many to work on this, I think we can do much without going offline....

First we will have to review all pages, just to comment and clean pages.
-At this step I proposed to "tag" pages as OK, this is because we have to be sure that all pages have been reviewed, so I think it's quite important, no? -When I say "tag", I did not meant a thing such tagging {{tag>tag1 tag2 tag3}} , it was more "just add a text at the beginning with your name+date" although tags are OK, this time it's just for the time it takes to migrate.
        - Also to quote Andi :
 * when touching most of the wiki anyway, pages should be cleaned up
as well (mostly transferring pages from discussion style to document
style -> delete comments, questions, answers and integrate their facts
into the content itself)

This part can be done while online I think, no ? If so, this can take as much time as it need.... - Outdated / irrelevant / misplaced content in pages should also be moved progressively to the new namespace. And as this content is rarely linked to, it should not be a problem to move it....

Once this is done, we can begin the biggest part. If we do it by hand this may take quite a lot of time. What has to be done is :
1 Move the page to it's new place
        2 Update links within page
        or Update backlinks

- If you do it the manual/"brute force" way, you will find that this will be much of a burden, as when you edit a page you will have to find all the links, know what is the new link and then edit(which is source of mistakes), and for backlinks, you will have to go through each refering page and edit specific links (although only one of these both should be done). - That's why I think there is a more comfortable "computer assisted" way. I have quite much ideas about this...

 * translated pages have to be restructured when possible without
knowledge of the language
   * if not possible without language knowledge a warning about the
page needing attention has to be added

This is a problem, if we don't move this we loose the benefit of the translation plugin. However, I don't think that the move "as-is" will be a big problem. But, for the pages with heavy transformation, we may loose much content...

 * the whole restructuring should be done in a big collective effort
on an agreed date (maybe over some weekend) to avoid having the wiki
in a inconsistent state for a longer time, having contributors in the
IRC at the same time might be a good idea as well
OK

 Good night
