How about... extendimg the plugin model a bit; have a (sub)plugin that can be specified on a per-language basis. English and German ship with the "rule-based language-specific" pluralization as Gabriel originally described, and *in the absence of a language-specific sub-plugin*, the acronym plugin just KISSes off any other languages as Andi suggests. Flexibility at the expense of some architectural complexity, but not much. And I'm sure that it will make a difference in some languages (e.g., Romance languages).
