Just a bit of a reality check, at least with respect to Centos/Red Hat.
Centos 7, which is the most recent version, is still at php 5.4.16.

Upgrading to php 7 seems to
be a bit dicey at the moment.
That's why I said we might do it in the future (depends how far away
the release after the upcoming release will be).
However. PHP 5.4 and 5.5 are no longer receiving *any* updates.
Neither bugs nor security issues are fixed. PHP 5.6 is also offfically
end of life but will continue to receive security fixes for the next
two years: http://php.net/supported-versions.php
Running anything under 5.6 is just asking for trouble

I've seen a lot of systems using 5.4 for production; fortunately, not
many running 5.3. I myself have to host DW installations in servers over
which I have neither root privileges nor full decision making power, so
I have to work with what's available and I can understand any person
who's got to.
The alternative, of course, is just not using the latest DW version (I
myself prefer weatherwax and binky than more recent versions, due to
some issues with plugins and Opera Classic browser support, but that's
another matter). Pick your poison kind of thing.
It'd be good to have a good general guide of which DW versions are
supported with which backends. For example, all [[doku>requirements]]
says it's required to have 5.3.4 or newer, but I'd like to see more
granular information (eg.: "what is the latest version that can use 5.5
without spurious warnings?" or "what is the earliest version fully
supporting PHP 7.x, including oft-needed plugins?").
All that said, do we have a means like the plugin popularity thing to
see what the backends of the current DW setups are like? if it weren't
because I suspect a heavy PHP 5.3 base, I'd be much welcoming of bumping
the minimum requirement to 5.5.
