I strongly second Chris Smith's recommendation to have an
immediately-working out-of-box installation, having recently gone
through the process of testing out a number of wikis, I also agree
with Andreas that anyone who's going to be running a wiki will be able
to edit configuration files, but not at the initial (trial)
installation.
The importance of a tidy and immediate installation is not, as Chris
implies, that it makes it easier to use DokuWiki, but because it makes
it much more likely that DokuWiki will be chosen for use. If I (as an
administrator testing out a series of wikis) can install and test it in
a matter of minutes, the chances that I'll adopt it are much, much
higher. If it takes me a few hours of poking, prodding, and tinkering
to get it working, then the impression I have is that I'll be doing that
sort of thrashing at it forever.
The readers of this list have, by and large, made up their minds about
what wiki to use, so aren't all that interested in initial features.
But for all the potential DokuWiki adopters out there, an easy path to
installing a working wiki would be a very convincing feature.
