Eeeks!  If it's minor, I might be correcting the spelling of one word.  I 
wouldn't want to write a summary for that.  A lot of my edits are like that, in 
the day or two after posting a new page.

(1) To keep you from having to specify a summary ("I knowingly declare this to 
be minor").  =)

(2) To keep the clutter out of the RSS feed.  You really only need to see a 
minor edit if it wasn't really minor, so these should be discovered rather than 
reported.  I guess the idea is that the feed informs people of changes to 
content.  Note that the feed currently only reports the most recent edit for 
any page, so the idea is in keeping with the feed being more of a casual 
summary of changes.

and I just now thought of this...

(3) To mark the edit as minor in the old revisions list, so users browsing for 
major changes can skip them.
