Hi folks,
Long time listener, first time caller. (Isn't it funny how, when you
lurk on a list for a long time, you feel like you know everyone, but
then you have to remember that NO ONE knows you?)
(This may get long. I'm a chatterbox. Get another cup of coffee.)
I'm a independent software developer in Milwaukee, WI. Been writing
systems for customers for 20+ years. Started using DW at the beginning
of the year to help build systems specifications and documentation in
collaboration with my customers.
In my copious spare time, I've also written about a dozen books on
various aspects of software development, primarily database, but a
couple of other topics as well. As I started using DW, I realized that
it was a perfect tool for independent developers like myself - and
decided to write a book on how to use it, from the perspective of a guy
like me.
DW should be a tool in the toolkit of every software developer. All the
requirements were there: Easy to install and deploy, powerful and
flexible to use. Nice folks in the community. What could be better?
Anyways, I started working on a book and have now gotten to the point
where I'm ready to have a couple of folks review drafts. If you're
interested, let me know and I'll fill you in on the details, how the
process works, etc.
If you contact me direct at
whil [[at]] hentzenwerke //dott// com
as opposed to simply replying to the list, I'll see it sooner.
Here's a tentative outline:
The Basics
1. Another Boring Introduction
2. Quick Install
3. The Installer in Detail
4. User Editing and Page Formatting
5. Creating a Wiki Structure (name spaces)
6. Version Mania: Change, Revisions, Drafts and Stuff
7. Important Configuration Options
8. Your First Template
9. Your First Plugins
10. Deploying and Upgrading
11. Making the Install RAD
The Advanced Stuff
12. Under the Hood: Folders, Files, and Program Flow
13. A Security Smörgåsbord
14. Authentication with Backends
15. Data: Understanding, Securing, Moving, Backing Up
16. Email and RSS
17. Farm Install
19. Creating a Template
20. Creating a Plugin
21. How Do I...? (Weird Question Time)
The Reference
22. A Plethora of Configuration Options
23. A Plethora of Plugins
24. A Plethora of Templates
The Software Developer's Guide to Using DW
25. User Scenarios
26. A Sample Specification, Wiki-Style
Like I said, this is tentative. I'm sure to lose interest in a couple of
these chapters along the way. :) The last section needs work, too.
What's in it for you? You'll get your name in the acks, a free copy or
two (particularly good if you want to show off to potential clients or
employers) and dinner's on me should we ever meet up face to face.
As with open source software, with enough eyes, all typos are shallow.
I've done this collaborative book review with the last couple books I've
done and it's had the dual benefits of producing a much better product
and developing some new friendships.
The commitment isn't onerous, but it's not one to take lightly either.
If you think you might be interested, holler and we can talk more. Hope
to hear from you.
