Yes, that was it. (My stupidity). Crimson Editor has options for UTF-8
"with BOM" and "wo BOM" -- and I obviously forgot which one to use!
Not a bug, just user (actually administrator) error.
I have to say that I'm amazed with the stability, predictability and
clean structuring of Dokuwiki. I'm still supporting PmWiki on a large
community website over at http://projects.isss.org , but Dokuwiki is
turning out to be the choice on (a) a collaborative book-writing web
site; (b) my family web site; and (c) an alumni web site. (I'd give
more details, but we're trying to keep all of these semi-hidden!)
