What's wrong with linking to it with [[http://server.com/image.ext|blah]] ?

If talking about internal media links...  have you tried adding something like 
"?.txt" on the end?  That at least works the other way round, to get 
cgi/php/etc-generated images to display, by adding ?.gif or whatever on the 
end...  O.o
