[dokuwiki] Installing Dokuwiki without mail service

Good morning,
I am setting up a test server to play with Dokuwiki. The intent is to
use it to learn PHP while trying some plug-ins and other features that I
can't play with on the live server at work, and possibly set up a family
wiki for my children and grandchildren to access via VPN. This server is
on a private network inside my firewalls.
The install script is complaining that PHP 'mail' is not working. There
was some discussion on this in the mailing list about two years ago, but
the conclusion seems to be that there must be a mail service available.
I have not installed an MTA on this server, nor do I see any need to do
so since RSS already provides me all of the update information I want.
So I have two questions.
1. Is there an easy way to change that error into a warning and let the
installation proceed? It is not necessary to disable all mail options
automatically, but that would be a nice side effect.
2. Is there a simple method to redirect the mail generated into a local
log file for debugging or /dev/null when not?
My server configuration is as follows:
Dell PowerEdge 2200 (P-II/300MHz)
Slackware 10.2
Apache 1.3.37
PHP 4.4.5
Dokuwiki current 2/27/07
As a side question, is the Atom feed still at version 0.3, or has that
been upgraded to 1.0 now? If it is still 0.3, what is needed to update it?
Thank you,
Bob McConnell
