I agree, but I couldn't wait for the new stable. I definitely want to
go that route on an updated version though.

you make a plugin to handle "TPL_NONE_GOOGLEANALYTICS" event.  The event
handling mechanism will load the code associated with the plugin if its
there.

Any template wishing to utilize the plugin include the line 

Yeah, I was hoping there might be some standardized
"PRE_HEADER"/"POST_HEADER" and a "PRE_CONTENT"/"POST_CONTENT" (and
others possibly) kind of events such that if there's a bunch of
plugins that need to run at separate times, they're more automatic...
