I personally don't (currently) want a sidebar, so if you added it to the
default template, would it be easy to remove or deactivate?  I
understand your wanting to maintain one template only; I really like the
current default template so no complaints from me :)

Apparently this is easily done by changing one line in the CSS, so I'm
not too bothered now.

As it's something I'd like to use, no ;)  Depends if a lot of people
would like this breadcrumb system - if yes, then I'd say a config option
would be good.  If few people are interested by this, then no.
Hopefully I'll have time soon to find the relevant page and see what I
have to change manually to have hierarchical breadcrumbs.
