[dokuwiki] Downloading TGZ (corruption)

I have docuwiki (2006-03-09) and I've got a strange problem with
certain kinds of files. I have a several tgz's that get corrupted
during download. The strange thing is that the TGZ files are exactly
the same size, but the contents are pratically completely different
using diff. For example:

File A:
< 0000000 8b1f 0008 0000 0000 0300 1800 e780 1f7f
< 0000010 088b 1e08 5036 0044 6a00 7468 7074 2e64
< 0000020 6174 0072 1000 ef20 37df bc7a 27af 001c
...

File B: 
0000000 8b1f 0808 361e 4450 0000 686a 7474 6470
0000010 742e 7261 0000 2010 dfef 7a37 afbc 1c27
0000020 0200 0d79 c3db 3109 0001 0000 0000 0024

...

File B is the correct file (sftp'd directly from the media directory),
and I don't have any idea where to start looking in to this. FIle A
gunzips apparently OK but tar doesn't like the output.
