It's discouraging to hear that you had so much trouble installing with
CPAN. In any event, it sounds as though you were finally successful
in in installing DoukWikiFCK. Any future upgrades should then be
simple. Just replace the old DokuWikiFCK.pm with the new one in your
perl distribution directory. (On Red Hat, this defaults to
/usr/lib/perl5/site_perl/HTML/WikiConverter. ) And replace the old
plugin directory (plugins/fckg) with the new one. There's no need
to re-install using CPAN.
I know this is no help if you want to install on another Debian
box. You might find it's better to skip CPAN and download the
required modules and install them manually. At some point I may be
able to get access to a Debian box and will try to work on the
installation problems. Perhaps you could give me some idea of what
kinds of problems you had. If they were problems with the DokuWikiFCK
distribution I might be able to correct them without having access to
Debian. I was able to do this for FreeBSD, after notification of
install problems from CPANtesters.
As for converting to PHP, I believe that question had been raised
earlier on this list. Even if I did convert to PHP, it might not
entirely solve problems such as the one you had with CPAN, because
whatever I do would be based on modules found in the PEAR repository.
So, you would still have this intermediary step of dealing with a
module repository. In any event, converting over to PHP is something
to think about for the future, but in the meantime, to be truthful, I
don't have the courage to think of the labor involved.
Best,
Myron

At first, thank you very much for your ongoing effort to improve
visual editing for DokuWiki! I really like DokuWikiFCK, but I had
quite a few problems installing the CPAN modules on my debian linux.
Would it be possible to drop the perl module and write a php
replacement for it? So installing DokuWikiFCK would only require to
extract the plugin and nothing more. Do you think this is reasonable
and possible? I'd like to help make installing and using the
FCKeditor even easier.
