The empty <b> tags are *not* invalid! Although eg. Tidy says so.
Unfortunately Tidy has a few "errors". If you want to check your code
for real XHTML validity, use either the W3C Validator (validator.w3.org,
which unfortunately has some issues as well) or an even better one:
http://schneegans.de/sv/.
But I would agree that those empty <b> tags are "bad style". But if you
want to have those "nifty corners", that work in most browsers, there
are only "bad style solutions" out there. And they have been accepted by
most developers ...
