[ddots-l] Re: tips on using the multiband compressor

Your ears are the best bet here, though of course you could look at say a
spectrum annalizer to show you what's going on, but I haven't heard of an
accessible one... What kind of music are you working with? Sometimes
something like the bass can cause spikes, or say a snare with some sharp
transients or something that has a little oo much eq. You don't want to
raise your volume above -.1db, as that'll definitely distort your sound on
some players, not to mention when converting to mp3 or some other format
with a poor quality converter, your track will sound contorted in many ways
lol. You might have a good converter at hand that you use, but remember,
when the CD is sold, you don't know what kind of players or converters your
audience might have on their computers...
Hey if you justt need a bit of volume on your final rack, check out sony's
wave hammer, he smooth compression option, maser for 16 bi, or one of those
should probably do the trick, though becarefull that you don't overcompress.
In rock and hip hop is ok to sort of do these things, but if you compress
the crap out of say an orchestral piece or a jazz toon, you just might find
that it sounds too weird...

How would we determine where the out of hand stuff is? Would that be
something that we would just have to listen for, or are there meters in the
compressor that we can read? My big issue is that my tracks sound way too
soft and then when I use the VS64 or boost 11 to make it louder, it sounds
good. I can do this with no clipping. However when I export the track it
still sounds too soft to me. So what I'll do is importing it in to sound
forge and rays the volume up to say minus 0.5. At this point it's where I
would like it to be, but when I play the track in other CD players it sounds
too thick and distorted. What do you think?

Yes, you definitely want to use a multiband comp for mixing the overall
track; it lets you compress certain spectrums indevidually. Say if you had
too much out of hand stuff in the below 100hz spectrum, you could use 1 band
to get a tight compression there and get a solid bottom bass. Then you could
use the other bands to adjust other parts of the spectrum that needed
lighter compression or different settings. Say for example when compressing
around the 1khz mark, you want to compress a bit to get rid of any spikes
etc, but you can' overdo it, as that would make your mix start pumping, or
what in the hip hop world we call breathing too heavy, which is where you
can hear the volume changes as the compressor lowers and raises levels. This
happens a lot if you use a single band compressor which applies the same
settings to the whole spectrum. The threshold, atack and decay etc settings
that will get you a tight sound on the lower end will usually not work as
well for the upper bands. Anyways, I could go on and on, but basically, yes,
you need a good multiband comp to get your mix nice and tight sounding...

Subject: [ddots-l] tips on using the multiband compressor

I was told by a friend that the multiband compressor is almost always used
in mixing and mastering. I generally only use it for the presets and I'm
wondering how I could use it to its full potential. I have explored the
dialog and I think I can tell that each of the bands are used for
compressing or emphasizing certain frequencies. I guess I'm just trying to
get a handle on how to use it more effectively. Are there meters in the
plugin that show when certain bands are overly emphasized? I'm asking
because I'm still trying to figure out how to make my tracks sound as loud
as other tracks I hear.
