Hi,
I apologize, but I am not too technical in computer, meaning that I don't
know all the specs on my computer, but it is one of the creation station
with xp as an operating system. I have not added any plug in other than the
ones that came with the bundle for sonar 8.5.
The run time error happens at any given time. And if I don't save before it
happens I lose all the work that I've done up to that point! That is as much
that I know.

This is probably caused by one of the plug-ins that you're using. If any of
the plug-ins that are loaded as part of your project crash, they take all of
Sonar with them.
When does it happen? Have you just added a synth or effect to a project?
Have you just opened a project?
