I've tried it. At least for selecting sounds. I know you can do data entry
with it, but that doesn't solve the navigation through menus issue.

Has anyone tried the Fantom "G" series yet?  That has a feature which
turns the Pad buttons into numeric keys for direct entry access with
just a push of the "Numeric" button.
