What kind of stuff do you mainly throw at it? Just about everything or are
you more into 1 genre than the other, say more hip hop, rock, pop etc...

So it's agreed that the rode nt1a is good for vocals? Somebody was trying to
sell me one of those, i heard it was good for vocals, but the sources
weren't too convincing, does any of you know from experience? I was thinking
of getting either a c1 or c3 for vocal work, of course later on i'll be
expanding, but i'm now getting into the actual recording of vocals, for
quite some time i've been doing a lot of mixing, mastering arranging and
recording tracks. I want to get something that has a nice warm feeling for
general vocals. I was thinking of ribbon mikes for the brass/winds, but not
too sure on that as they are too delicate for my taste... I know that a
shure would probably do me well, but need to consider my alternatives and
make an informed decisions, get stuff that'll work for a few various
projects till i can get money to buy some more specific mics for different
types of recordings...

Hi Len, Quite often its a matter of taste and who is doing the singing, but
would say the first question has to be how much money do you have to spend.
Have nothing but good things about the Rode NT1A which can be gotten for
$229 which would say is very reasonable for a good quality mic. I just
purchased an NT2A which I really like so far but costs a bit more. Have
always liked the AKG 414 for a little more money. Dave

Subject: [ddots-l] question about microphones

Hi all. I'm thinking of purchasing a good quality vocal microphone for
myself for studio recording purposes. I hear and read that capasitor or
microphones are used these days instead of dynamic microphones and that they
use phantom power. I understand those things but now I must purchase a good
one. The shops hear don't keep stock of those kind of microphones so it is
very difficult to get one to test with. I just wondered what some of you
guys are using? I know you get mikes that are very expensive like the numan
u87 and so on but I don't have that kind of money haha. I think this can be
a gnice discussion.

Kind regards

Len Viljoen
