Hi, if he's trying to record from the keyboard, there's a bit of involved
settings to set up properly to get it working. I did this a while ago with one
of my arrangers, and even on the motif, doing it to record arps is a pain, so
most people just go the audio route.
You have to set both sonar and the keyboard's midi settings, such that the
clocks match (with the right ppq, usually 480), the mtc clocks have to be
synced, so that sonar receives it from the keyboard and slaves to it. The MMC
data also has to be presnt, so that sonar starts recording when it receives a
start command from the keyboard and stops when the keyboard sends the stop
command.
On top of all that, you need to make sure that recording the styles is allowed
and that there are no audio portions. In the case of Yamaha for example,
certain protected styles and songs will not generate midi out data because of
copyright issues. Likewise, other of their newer styles have audio loops, which
obviously can't be sent as midi.
All these things need to be considered when troubleshooting all this. Of course
there's a possibility that I'm way off here, since my experience has been
between Yamaha arrangers and SONAR, and the roland arranger I owned I never
used with sonar, so I can't say I have first hand xperience with the particular
setup; however since most of these MIDI settings will be the same regardless,
it should be of some help to you to check all the settings I mentioned.

Not sure on that one. I would've suggested the same thing, given the same
circumstance. I'd sure like to know what's going on there as well. It could
also be that you'll have to insert additional midi tracks into the project so
that the data being generated from the style on your keyboard will be there;
perhaps you're already doing that. What seems to be the mystery here is that
the data's not being outputted. I wonder if the instrument needs to be in a
different midi mode for this to work correctly?
I know that my BK-7M has different modes so you can set it up according to what
sort of master keyboard you're using. I don't remember how the styles output
data. Guess I'm going to have to bone up on that when I get into using the
Style Converter. Here we go again; gonna have to get sighted assistance.

Mike, can you think of any reasons why channels 6, 11, 12, 14, and 16
aren't working between sonar and my arranger? I spoke with Roland, and
one suggestion they had was that the parts were muted or turned off in
whatever style I'm on when opening sonar. That has proven untrue,
however. The same issue happens no matter what style I use when
opening sonar. So I'm assuming it's a global fix of some sort.
