Chad,
It sounds like a latency issue. If I'm right, you're hearing back the
previously recorded material mixed with the new content you are recording.
The new content is going from digital files on the hard drive being
converted to audio, one conversion process. Meanwhile, the new punched in
material is going from audio to digital then being played back as part of
the full mix so back from digital to audio.
One way that was suggested to me for this with another audio recording
program was to have the output of the prior material go into a hardware
mixer and then the new material also going into the mixer, listening to
both via the control room output via headphones plugged into the mixer.
And of course that new content alone would be routed out of the mixer and
into the recording software.
Within the software environment, without having an external mixer, then it
is best to pick a lower hardware buffer size when overdubbing. And then
later when mixing lots of tracks with various plug-ins, increase the
hardware buffer size. In my Pro Tools rig I can have the buffer too high
and hear the delay between the time I hit the guitar string and the time
it comes out of the monitors. When I drop the buffer in that to 256
samples or 128 it isn't noticeable. I assume that Sonar has a similar
change you can make.
